When Community Comes Together: Highlights from Our April 25 Autism Awareness Event

On April 25, something meaningful unfolded in our community.

KD Care Community ABA Services partnered with the Islamic Center of Detroit and Thriving Minds Network to host an Autism Awareness event that brought together parents, educators, and specialists for a shared purpose: to better support children through understanding, connection, and practical tools. This was a space designed for real conversations, honest questions, and actionable guidance.

A Focus on Real-Life Application

The goal of the event was clear—empower families with strategies they can use in their everyday lives.

Our speaker guided attendees through evidence-based approaches rooted in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), helping parents understand not just what behaviors are happening, but why they happen. That shift—from reacting to understanding—can be transformative for families navigating autism.

One of the key frameworks shared during the session was CONNECT FIRST. Rather than focusing solely on correcting behavior, this approach emphasizes building a strong, trusting relationship as the foundation for growth. When children feel understood and supported, meaningful progress becomes possible.

Small Changes, Lasting Impact

A powerful theme throughout the event was the idea that progress doesn’t come from one big moment—it comes from small, consistent actions over time.

Parents left with simple but impactful strategies they could begin using immediately. Whether it was adjusting how they respond to challenging behaviors or finding new ways to engage with their child, the focus remained on creating sustainable change.

Creating Space for Dialogue

One of the most impactful parts of the event was the panel discussion, where community leaders and specialists came together to answer questions and share insights.

The conversation centered around a critical concept: the role of a parent’s response in shaping behavior. Attendees were encouraged to reflect on their own interactions and consider how small shifts in response can lead to more positive outcomes.

Just as importantly, families were given the opportunity to connect—with experts, with one another, and with a broader support system. That sense of community is often just as valuable as the information itself.

A Reminder That Matters

Throughout the event, one message stood out.

Dr. Najat Fradi, International Engagement Coordinator at KD Care Community, reminded every parent in the room:

You are your child’s greatest support.

It’s a simple statement, but one that carries weight. In a world that can often feel overwhelming, that reminder grounded the entire experience.

Moving Forward, Together

Events like this are a reflection of what’s possible when a community comes together with intention. By creating spaces where families feel supported, informed, and connected, we move closer to a more inclusive and understanding world.

We are deeply grateful to our partners, our speakers, and every family who took the time to attend and engage.

Because when knowledge is shared and support is felt, every family benefits.
